My experience:
* surgery for 3.5 hours (was told it could go as long as 5 hrs)
I was happy to have it go fast which meant it went smoothly without complications
* I had braces, so got 'surgical loops' installed on my brackets by orthodontist. Had bands post-surgery for 6 weeks
My surgeon routinely used fixation. It's possible that newer techniques allow for no fixation? I HATED the bands and the little plastic retainer thing on my upper palate.
* 1 day in ICU
* 1 day in hospital after ICU
Recovery the first few days went quickly, and then slowed down to the typical crawl. I had surgery Thursday noon and discharged
* Possibility of bone graft from hip for jaw
This was not needed after all. I was glad since reports are that it might be sore for up to a few months.
* Liquid/soft diet for 2-1/2 months
I got creative. Amazing what can be made soft and still be palatable. You are only 'drinking' for a week or two. Much soft food can be 'masticated' using just your tongue. It is slow though - anyone who has been a quick eater will find mealtimes taking forever.
