I am not a doctor. Here is my impression of what goes on:::

When an obstruction occurs, it occurs during inhalation. at this point, the diaphragm exerts repeated extra efforts in attempting to overcome the obstruction. When these efforts stop, the diaphragm relaxes to an inverted cup position. It is my understanding that this sudden relaxation of the diaphragm forces the rapid exhalation of air. This is the cause of the 'snort', at least that is my understanding.
