Pain under the tongue...

Hey, all you MMA/GA gurus...

I'm checking in to see if anyone has experienced long term post surgical pain under the tongue. I'm the problem child who had two unusual issues post MMA/GA last August (nerve pain in my lower face-- now mostly resolved-- and acute pain in my jaw joints which is still a problem on the left side). In the weeks following my surgery I mentioned pain I was experiencing under my tongue to the surgeon, and it was clear from his expression and response that he had never heard anyone complain of such a problem, so I thought that maybe I was being overly sensitive (everything was hurting at that point). However, it's been a year now, and the pain under the left side of my tongue is definitely still there, and I've noticed that no one else has ever posted about this topic.

It's very bothersome and pressing from the outside I can identify an exact tender spot under my left jawbone very close to the curve at the back. It's still a little difficult to stick my tongue out (to lick an ice cream cone, for example) or to clean something out of my front top teeth, and I can feel the stretch/pull when I swallow. Everything feels very tight.

I've been working with a physical therapist to try to resolve the jaw pain issues I'm having, and we've been working on my tongue, too. The musculature on the left side is tight, and I'm manipulating it by using my finger to gently press down along the inside of my mouth near the teeth from front to back. I also try to pick moments of solitude and darkness to stick my tongue out (wide and flat) moving from side to side. In case you are wondering... the only person who thinks it's charming is my seven-year old nephew.

So far, nothing seems to be making much of a difference. I think it's interesting that all the pain is on the left side and intuitively it feels like it's related to the joint pain I'm having. My right side is feeling pretty normal now.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts?
