Awaking from anesthesia went smoothly, although I don't really remember it now.
I remember Dr. K.L. coming in and casually saying that the surgery went perfectly. Now that's what I've been wanting to hear. Even though the rate of complications is low, it's really nice to realize that you're not a statistical outlier.
First day/night in the ICU felt really long. Mostly, I felt like I wanted to get out of bed and stretch. Too many sensors and catheters are hooked up to allow for that.
The nurses in the ICU are really responsive. Especially my overnight nurse Jenny. After a bout of sleep I would crack my eyes open and she'd immediately ask “how you feeling, are you okay?”. That nurse had ninja-like senses.
I was released to the main part of the hospital about 7AM on Thursday but it took until the early afternoon for a bed to open up. My desire to get out of bed made this span of time really long and unpleasant.
I got transferred into a private room (luck of the draw). Several hours later, the nurse asked me if I would be willing to switch with another patient who was having a hard time into a “semi-private” room. I was happy to oblige. Although I winced at the marketing fluffiness of the term “semi-private”. Does that mean they have public rooms too? Is it also known as the sidewalk?
Most people want to know how painful this is. For me, there has not been much pain. I've had some nasty headaches, I've had to struggle to breathe when my nose is congested, my energy has been so low it's a struggle to do much of anything, but not much pain. It's still pretty unpleasant. It's like having a bad flu. It's not painful, it just sucks.
I'm thrilled to be doing this though.
