So far, I've had the great fortune of not being very surprised. Here's a list of small surprises:

1) That they don't seem to have the technology in the Advanced Medicine Center at Stanford to properly strap down a couple of ice packs to one's jaw.
2) That one of the most unpleasant aspects of my recovery in the first few days was having phlegm trapped in my mouth. I had a suction straw at my bedside the whole time but my teeth were in the way from it being that effective.
3) How incredibly slow time can go when you're in the hospital.
4) How quick and casual the follow-up visits are with Dr. K.L. I suppose was expecting a thorough examination.
5) How much nicer it is to be at home recovering.
6) How a lot of the surgical trauma seems to come from the anesthesia tube that they run up your nose. Had my nose had not been beat up I think this whole thing would have been more comfortable. It's not that my nose hurt, its that the associated congestion makes breathing difficult.

As far as sleep I've been taking a few naps a day plus sleeping most of the night. I feel like my brain is about to come back online in the next day or two.
