I was advanced 7mm on top and 12 mm on the bottom.

Different physiologies allow for different amounts of advancement. So no - don't judge amount of advancement, but look at how much airway you get. Remember that you don't want TOO much airway, as you might have problems closing it off while swallowing.

I would trust your surgeon as far as soft foods. He knows exactly what he had to do and has a better idea on how long it will take to be stable than anyone else.

Ten weeks sounds like forever but the goal is to completely heal the jaw - its's the only one you'll have, so you want it to be good.

The only issue is that your orthodontist and surgeon don't agree. I'd ask them to talk and work out an approach that makes each of them happy - for instance, no bands for four weeks, but then when incisions are healed, start wearing bands?
