I've been waiting for an answer to this but none. So with my limited knowledge, I'll toss out some ideas.

Fusion takes several weeks. It varies a bit depending on the health of the person and complications. Excessive movement can prevent the bone from fusing. You might notice a tightening feeling and I think this is probably fusion taking place. After about 6 weeks the bone is fused but more bone and strength is added even after that spurred by usage. The gaps in the mandible created when the 2 pieces are separated will never fully fill in and you can probably feel a notch through your cheek on the side near the bottom. After 6 months the bone is probably about as strong as it's going to get and almost as strong as the initial structure.

Ok, I made all that up. Please correct me someone. :)
