Well...If it is a clean break that is stabilized, the books say that 80-90% healing can occur at 8 weeks.

Of course, if there is a gap...filled in with bone fragments or slush...like the maxilla, the healing process will definitely take alot longer. Added to that, age, steroids, poor health, and instability or movement of the bone(s) will substantially delay healing.

The mandible is actually stronger at 8 weeks after a BSSO than the maxilla because it is securely pinned in a clean cut. The maxilla has a gap that has to fill in, and then heal. You can feel that gap about an inch behind your front teeth. It is also typically the area that remains numb for quite awhile.

At 6 months, Westernjoe (not to be confused with Joe the Plumber) is correct. It should be healed and strong.
