Well, there are a couple of things you must know. First, if you studies on MMA surgery, you will see that they will say that say 40 people took part in the study and ended up. Before the study, they had something like an average AHI of 35 plus or minus 15 (some had an AHI of 50 and others, an AHI of 25. They treated the people with MMA surgery, and they ended up with an average of 9 plus or minus 15. So, some people got an AHI of zero and some higher, at the extreme, one guy got 22. We don't know what the guy had beforehand. Maybe he had 50 and reduced it to 22, for example. Basically, many people who get MMA surgery will still require CPAP. Some will not need CPAP any longer. Hopefully, it will cure a person, but often it falls short of a full cure but does result in a marked improvement.
I had surgery on both jaws and also had GA on my tongue. The operation was done correctly and well. In my case there was scar tissue damage from LAUP surgery which I feel was a factor.
My opinion is the MMA surgery is worthwhile. It is reliable and stable since it involves moving bones and not soft tissues. Nevertheless, I do not think that people should start thinking of MMA as something that is going to deliver them from reliance on CPAP. As I said, it could well do, that involves a bit of luck.
I can tell you that I am sleeping much better now than I was last year at this time. Today, for example, I felt fully alert and calm. I was not tired at all in the morning. My thoughts were not muddled as they were last year. When I sleep on my side with CPAP I am able to sleep through the night without waking up. That was an absolute impossibility last year. I used to wake up with painful jolts all night long even when CPAP was worn. Basically, I feel that my situation has improved very much.In regards to the mechanics of it, the doctor told me that I had only about 1mm airway before he operated. This was due to scar tissue from a laser operation. By MMA surgery and GA, he was able to enlarge my airway significantly. Obviously it is not collapsing nearly as much. I am thankful. To tell you the truth, I didn't care if I got off CPAP. All I wanted was an improvement. In the end, praise God, that is what I received.
