What are my options?

Hello,

Sorry in advance for the long message.

I'm a 27 year old male that is not overweight. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea a couple years ago.

In my first doctor visit they suggested I use a dental appliance so I did. For the first few months it seemed to work out fine, but then later I started waking up in the middle of the night choking and having a rapid heart beat. I've had EKG tests and a 24-hour holter monitor done and everything turned out normal.

I then visited another doctor who suggested to just have my adenoids removed. I didn't think that was the problem because I felt that my choking seemed to be centralized at my throat region and not my nose.

I then spoke to a 3rd doctor who suggested UPPP. Because of the invasiveness and the horror stories I have read online, I decided to just get my tonsils removed. So about a month ago I did just that (nothing else was removed other than my tonsils). I still wore my dental appliance and for the first couple weeks after surgery everything seemed fine until recently. My symptoms are that I sleep fine for about 3-5 hours but then I wake up choking and with a rapid heart beat. I'm not even tired throughout the day. It's as if I have 3-5 hours of good sleep but interrupted by the choking.

I even did a sleep test done and it showed that I do not have sleep apnea. That is because only about 3 hours of testing was done (I didn't get much sleep because of anxiety).

I have an overnight pulse oximeter and it shows my breathing is fine up until 4-5 hours of sleep and that's when I wake up due to choking. I've tried out the CPAP and I sleep just fine (no more choking), but I'm just very uncomfortable with it and I can't sleep more than 5-6 hours because of discomfort.

My doctor said I am a good candidate for the UPPP and I'm greatly considering it.

Any thoughts/comments on my situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike
