Mike,
Regarding your sleep study- I find that there is a lot of variation between how different doctors interpret a sleep study. Sometimes- the physician doesn't even really look at the recordings and just lets the sleep tech grade it. Anyway- that could be the reason why one doctor thinks you have it and another doesn't. My feeling is that if every sleep doctor had sleep apnea- they would most likely interpret a sleep study much differently. For many- it is just a lucrative way to make money. And it becomes a "cookie cutter" kind of thing.
So regarding the choking sensation:
1)It could just be an apnea or hypopnea waking you up. It does not seem to occur when you use the CPAP
2)GERD- acid reflux can often cause that choking sensation. It almost feels like your airway is closing off. It is probably caused when a person aspirates acid into their vocal cords and then their airway. It doesn't like that and wakes you up. The heart racing would be a natural response to the adrenaline rush.
So I would ask if you have frequent heartburn or whether happens more often when you drink alcohol or eat right before bed. You could try taking prilosec (over the counter) 20 minutes before breakfast for a couple of weeks to see if that helps.
I would be curious to know if the choking happened during the sleep study. If it did- they could tell if it was related to an apnea or hypopnea.
I think adenoid enlargement is possible in a 27 year old but much less likely. A UP3 is unlikely to make a long term difference- assuming you have apnea.
Of course- the contents of this email may not apply to your case and you should, of course, always check with your doctor.Brian
