T-minus 9 hours: MMA

I will be having my MMA in 9 hours. I am having it in Dallas with Dr. LW. Brief summary- I was diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea in May of 2007. I had UP3, genioglossal advancement, hyoid suspension with improvement initially but about 80% relapse a month or so after the surgery (surgery was done in 8/07 and 12/07). I was nervous for a couple hours earlier today but that passed. It is hard to believe that I am on the eve of surgery. It has felt like a lifetime since my initial sleep study almost two years ago. This is a cruel disease that can slowly suck the life out of you without you even knowing why. The treatment options are barbaric and often do not help (not including MMA in the "not helping" category). But that being said, this disease has affected me in positive ways that I may not have gone through without this experience. As a physician, it has made me more empathetic and pushed me even harder to become better at what I do. In short, it has allowed me to develop a love for helping others that is much stronger that it had been before. So in a strange way, I would not give up this experience.

For those considering their options, I would strongly consider MMA before all of the other options. There are different schools of thought. I think that by the time you go through the other procedures that do not work- a person is more emotionally prepared for the more invasive MMA. But one must weight the fact that the other procedures do not typically result in long-standing improvement in their symptoms.
