I started seeing a sleep doc who is a neurologist instead of a pulmonologist :-) The difference is that the new doctor, besides having the perspective of a neurologist (and a very good one at that), does not use the standard American Academy of Sleep Medicine criteria for "scoring" a sleep study. He thinks the criteria is outdated and that in many patients there is a complex interplay between physical aspects and neurological aspects of apnea. This is known, not surprisingly, as "complex sleep apnea." So he uses a modified scoring method which I don't recall the details of, but I think basically the modified method allows more events to be classified as "central" or "central-related" apneas.
