I actually know and heard of 3 surgeons who do these operations together. Airway problem is certainly a concern, but I am more concerned about the small chance of bleeding in the throat, which is VERY bad. Even a trach is probably not going provide security.
LAUP was first promoted as an "office" procedure as it is done under local anesthesia. It DEFINITELY does not cause less scarring.
