Silvergirl:
If you decide to reconsider taking stimulant meds (e.g. Provigil,
Ritalin, Adderall, etc), I would highly recommend you consider
seeking an evaluation and/or treatment with a psychiatrist, and
not an internist. While internists can legally prescribe stimulant
meds, in general, these MD's are not the most appropriate docs
to determine if stimulant meds would be best given your
medical concerns. If stimulant meds might be indeed worth
trying given your medical circumstances, psychiatrists
(especially those psychiatrists experienced with treating child
and/or adult attention deficit disorder) are more likely to do a
better job at monitoring and mitigating side effects that may
develop for you. Sometimes stimulants do create unpleasant
side effects, but experienced psychiatrists have a good track
record of combining stimulant meds with other meds (e.g
antidepressants. Often combining meds can be quite helpful for
managing cognitive and mood problems that accompany sleep
apnea. Lastly, combining medications with psychotherapy more
often than not, provide the best treatment results (and can be
another avenue for coping with side effects that come with
medications). Successful medication regimens often do not
develop quickly; a lot of patience on your part, trust in your
doctor, and a willingness to participate in several medication
trials may be required of you, should you decide on
medication(s) as an adjunct to your bipap treatment. Best of
luck Silvergirl....
