Bibia,
Ultimately - this is your call. I just posted about my 5 week
MMA results. I personally wish I could have started with the
MMA. I think that you need to go to a surgeon that is at the top
of the field. For me - that was as essential as having the
surgery. No one but you can assess the risks vs. benefit of the
procedure. To me (and just me) it was well worth the risk- but I
knew and trusted my surgeon.Surgeons vary in the results in terms of success and post-
surgical looks. As Dr. Li has said in "ask the expert" cosmetic
results vary big time in regards to the skill of the surgeon. On a
personal level, I looked fine before surgery and look a little bit
better after. But that was only because I went to a surgeon who
knew how to maximize the opening of the airway without
compromising my cosmetic appearance. That is something you
will need to research regarding your potential surgeon. But I think UPPP and tongue advancement can help in the short
term but the long-term success does not appear to be very
good. I was told by many people that I was crazy for having the
MMA. But each person must find or develop their own internal
compass and figure out what is best for them. My family's fears
and concerns were not mine. For many, MMA is a big deal recovery-wise. For me (so far) it
has been like a really bad wisdom tooth extraction. I have not
had any major issues and feel way better than prior to surgery. I
hope I will continue to be saying this many months and years
out. But I am only 5 weeks out. It is helpful to have other's
opinions who have been many years post-op.Good luck,
Brian
