Thank you for this very interesting post. This is an issue of concern for me.
I have seen two surgeons (in France) for MMA and both recommanded 11mm advancement of the lower jaw and 5mm for the upper maxillary (which they said to be more important for my OSA). They both (independently!) said that "more will make me look like an ape". My orthodontist says "11mm is big". Moreover, a bigger advancement of the upper maxillary could make the nose look bad. But the pulmonary specialist I see for OSA says that he finds the numbers "small".
It is very interesting this issue of different measurements of the advancement. I was not aware of it. I had the impression that they were referring to the amount the front teeth are advanced. I might have been wrong. I will ask the surgeon to be more precise when I see him. Thanks a lot.
