Posted by riveroses on April 07, 2009 at 10:51:49:I am a petite 38 yr old and have had rheumatoid arthritis since age three which resulted in my lower jaw having stunted growth (therefore, it is shorter/receded). I discovered several years ago that I have sleep apnea and so finally decided to have surgery to correct my bite and the OSA. I have had braces for over a year and am scheduled for MMA surgery April 29th. I have been thinking that the surgery will improve the appearance of my lower jaw but yesterday, the surgeon who I spoke with made me wonder about how the forward movement of my upper jaw will affect my appearance... he said that they will focus more on curing the sleep apnea than on cosmetics, and that the benefits for the sleep apnea should outweigh the possible costs of how it will affect my appearance. (What??) The upper will be moved approx. 8 mm and the lower 12-13 mm.
For those of you who have had the surgery, how much movement did you experience and what do you think of your facial appearance now as compared to before the surgery?
