Dr. Li:

I am 46, male. I had my modified UPPP, GA, tonsillectomy and adenoid removal about 18 months ago ("Stanford Phase 1 surgery protocol"). This was followed by RF turbinectomy and RF tongue reduction as well. My AHI numbers have gotten WORSE, they increased from 26 to 31 and sleep fragmentation is as bad as ever. As you can imagine, I was very very disappointed.

What bothers me is that the literature out there claims 70% cure rate for this surgery. Cure is defined as 5 events or less as defined by the surgeon who did it. In fact, when I talked to the surgeon before the surgery, about what would happen if I was in the unlucky 30% category, he reassured me saying that it was 70% of "ALL" UPPP surgeries. In my case it would be much higher because he did the fiber optic and X-ray examination and personally examined me.

I thought that perhaps I had been singularly unlucky, but have met numerous people at Stanford who have had the same experience and were considering other options. To be fair, I do know a couple of people where this surgery succeeded. However in my less than scientific poll, I honestly don't trust the 70% number and wonder about how effective this surgery really is. In fact my understanding is that this phase 1 protocol is highly recommended at Stanford before one goes to MMA. This seems somewhat different than your recommendations in your post.

Your comments would be highly appreciated.
