In my opinion, surgeon should not quote the same success rate for all patients in sleep apnea surgery as every patient is different. I cannot speak for other surgeons, but I try to put all the variables together and formulate an educated estimate for my patients. I do not give a greater than 70% success rate to ANY patient undergoing UPPP or any sort of phase I surgery. The only time I would give a 70% success rate is when there are HUGE tonsils present. Sometimes, I would try phase I surgery if I think it is reasonable to do so, but I would absolutely disagree that “phase 1 protocol is highly recommended at Stanford before one goes to MMA”. I am sure many of my patients can attest to that. All I can do is to try to educate patients so they can understand OSA and the treatment options as much as possible. I think a visit to "ask the surgeon" section can help you learn more about surgery and some of the pitfalls. I certainly understand your frustration and disappointment in the result of your operation. I hope you are able to manage your symptoms adequately.
