Buried deep in another thread, Western Joe had noticed that an Xray I posted had no mandible plates, just screws. Western Joe asked why, and I wanted to break out this post to make the response more accessible in a quick scan of topics.

Assuming that I understood the explanation from THE surgeon who did the MMA, he said that he uses mandible plates only with certain jaw anatomies. In my case, my mandible was not “thick” enough to warrant the plates. During the operation the surgeon separated the mandible with an angular cut, as opposed to an orthogonal cut. He then slid the mandible forward. Because of the angular cut, the separated bones still overlapped and could be secured with just screws.
