The data from the Aspire study is OK, not great. Some patients responded but some did not. It can potentially be an adjunct procedure to soft palat procedures. The results may be better than with genioglossus advancement, however, the company has folded because the results aren't great and will be VERY difficult to get approval from the FDA because of the complications-breakage of the device. Most of the "new" technologies have not worked out great thus far but there are a few more still going.

MMA still gets the best results, BUT not everyone is successful unfortunately, as you see from the experiences posted here. That is why the success rate is only about 90%.

It is just difficult for the non-responders because we are running out of treatment options. It is discouraging for both the patient and the surgeon. When MMA fails, it is back to CPAP and oral appliance. These treatment can sometimes help as the airway is way larger and the pressure requirement is less for CPAP and the oral appliance can expand the airway a bit more. The problem is when these things don't help either. Provent is a possibility, but like other OSA treatments, some patients respond but many not.

My message is for all patients to hang in there and don't give up. Many people (myself included) are working on new treatment options and hopefully they are just around the corner.
