Learian makes good her threat.

Has my MMA of June 2007 cured my sleep apnea? No. Has it given me a quality of life which I've hadn't had in years? Yes. Was it worth enduring to be free completely of the worst heartburn/GERD imaginable, a dread irregular heartbeat a four year headache, waking up nightly gasping and making primitive noises for air, and a fatigue that knew no bounds? Yes. Was my RDI of 60+ reduced to 13? Yes. Did my surgeon conclude that this was an excellent, not an exemplary result? Yes, if you can believe it. Would I go through the magnitude of an MMA again for the same result? Yes. Did I require additional surgeries following the MMA? Yes. Should I have had the soft tissue work pre MMA? No. Was having these surgeries the major factor in my being able to add 25+ hours to my work schedule and take delight in every minute worked? Yes.

Then why am I wearing braces in preparation for an MME with Dr. KL in December 2009? At the risk of becoming the elderly poster child for MMA follow-up work, I feel compelled to make the case that with severe sleep apnea there is often no "one stop shopping." All of my post MMA surgeries--uvula trim, a little more septoplasty, a modified pharyngeal lift, a little tip plasty for my healthy narcissism -- have been with one surgeon who has provided great counsel, exemplary surgical skill, and plenty of caution. I am having this MME because I still have a bit of sleep apnea and, ridiculous though this may sound, my tongue does not fit in my mouth comfortably. I was also offered a conservative and discreet radiofrequency of the tongue as an option but chose to go with an MME when I heard my surgeon say that he had greater control of the outcome with the latter.

Thank you, dear Readers.
