How common is an MMA?

I was just wondering how many apnea sufferers do this surgery. I know it's considered extreme, but I wondered how common the surgery is. Beyond the blogs this site links to, I haven't found any personal accounts. My BF had this done when he was 13 to correct a bite problem and he said it was no big deal. He was very young though.
