How is the Maxilla moved?

I've been obsessed with thinking about this. I mean, the last time I checked, the upper law is attached to the SKULL. How can a piece of the skull (upper jaw) be moved forward with one incision (Lefort)? Of course the sinuses get filled with blood, since that part appears to be snipped. But how would snipping the part under the nose lead to the ability to move that part of the skull? My contemplations are getting more grotesque, I'm afraid. Maybe it's still my inability to fully trust this surgical procedure. I think if I understood this better, it might put my mind at ease, though.
