MMA rubber bands: what for?

After MMA, it seems common to wear rubber bands holding together the two jaws.

What are their exact function(s)? Do they lessen tension on the muscles, by replacing them part of time?

Why do different patients use them differently: taking them off during whole day, or just for food, or one hour before meals, but all keep them during sleep?

How long does it take to open the mouth as before? Do rubber bands accelerate or slow this?

Thank you for your answers.
