Everybody is different. The operation effects some people much more than others. There are probably different variables, e.g. how old you are, if you otherwise healthy, etc.

In my case, I found that I was basically able to function just fine after about 2 weeks although I did have anemia at that time. At about two weeks, I was able to take a good long walk. I didn't work, but I think I could have done some non-physical light work. I know well that many people on the board were surprised at how quickly I recovered. There are some people who found that they could not even think. As for me, my pain was well managed by a drug called Dilaudid which comes in a liquid form. I would say that I felt onl a dull pain, and I was fine. Basically, it is like if somebody punched you in the face and broke your jaw. You are going to feel kind of "beat up", but it is not going to be unbearable.

One thing you have to think about is that you will probably have your jaws wired shut, so if your job involves talking, it will be unpleasant. You can indeed talk, but it is though clenched teeth. There is a variation of the operation which uses arch bars. I think in that case your jaws will not be wired shut.
