Hello All,
I have been lurking in the shadows, reading as many posts as I can in an effort to obtain as much information about surgical procedures for my sleep apnea. I have learned so much because of everyone's contributions to this site and I would like to say THANK YOU. I am 39 years old and I was originally diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea back in 2001. I have been fighting that CPAP machine ever since, and the doctor's and the insurance companies. Eight years later, I really do not feel any better than I did back then. I have an Auto Cpap and my compliance is probably around 30%. I usually rip the mask off 3-4 hours into sleep. This past month I had another sleep study. My AHI was 19, Oxygen Sat 82%, 5% REM sleep and severe "disease" in REM with 44 events per hour. Additionally, I have been fighting tooth and nail to get an oral appliance to see if this might help but to no avail. Seeing a dentist in Alexandria, VA..Dr M who did an extensive examination. The exam revealed Class IV Mallampati, Hypertrophic tonsils, elongated uvula, Malocclusion...Yada..Yada..Yada...

Sorry for the Long Intro...Here is my actual question??? Not sure if I am a candidate for MMA surgery or not. From everything I have read, the top notch experts seem to be at Stanford...How many of you have travelled cross country to consult these doctor's?? Would that be the best course of action?? Bite the bullet and incur thousands of dollars in medical bills....I understand people can not refer doctors here but are there any comparable doctors here on the east coast, DC, Baltimore, NY, Philadelphia??? What type of specialist am I looking for?? What certifications??? Thanks for your help...

Dave
