- MMA is effective for most people, but it is especially effective in people who have a weak chin (overbite), small / recessed jaw and for people who are young and who are not obese.
- MMA offers much more stable results than soft tissue surgeries because it involves moving bones. It enlarges the airway. In contrast, soft tissue surgeries involve cutting out obstructions. The risk is that when scar tissue forms (months after the surgery), that the area can tighten and the airspace can become smaller. This can produce even more severe sleep apnea.
- I have been to Dr. L. You will pay about 1300 bucks just for the consult which only lasts about 45 minutes. I think that it is worth it to get the opinion (in writing) stating how MMA would benefit you, and also how far he would advance you.
- MMA may cure you (small possibility), or it might significantly improve you (more probable). These are likely outcomes. However, some people have experienced no change or only a minimal change.
- If I were in your shoes, I would investigate MMA.
- You can go to either Palo Alto California (near San Fran) to see Drs. NP, Dr R, Dr. KL or you can go to Dr. Jeffrey P. in Atlanta. Those are the most well known authorities on MMA.
- You need to look for an Oral and Maxilofacial Surgeon (this is a branch of dentistry because it involves the mouth). You need to find someone who does a lot of MMAs for sleep apnea patients each year.Good luck.
