As far as I understand, and I am not a Medical Doctor:

One difference between MMA done for aesthetics or bite problems and the one for OSA: the size of advancement. Surgery for other reasons are usually made as small as possible (often less than 1 cm), while OSA related MMAs are often at least 1 cm. And the size matters a lot. The post-op effects (numbness, feeding problems ...) have a different scale, much bigger. The surgeon quality really matters even more.

The second difference is that the surgeon needs to move both the up (maxillo) and the down (mandibular) in order to make all the airways larger. Your surgeon has to have enough training on such cases.

If MMA does not work, then the additional soft tissues treatments are various, and only a surgeon expert in OSA can make the good choices.

I know it is not much of help to say this, but that's all what I can do.
