Both a regular blender and the Magic Bullet will functionally do what you need. The major difference is when you will make a smoothie and prepare food post MMA, you will be exhausted, and want to do things with the minimum effort required.

I found the major advantages of the Magic Bullet were:

1) Its small size didn't take over the counter
2) Very fast and easy to clean, unlike our heavy blender which has to be taken apart - separate the blades from the base and gasket, etc.
3) Comes with multiple "cups" that screw on to the blades, so each cup doesn't require cleaning after use - just put it in the dishwasher and use another cup.
4) Portion size was always perfect, and I never made too much food that was wasted.
5) Comes with great recipes once you start feeling better - we really like hummus. :-)
