Many of us are concerned at the prospects of the federal government taking over our healthcare system in the US, and for good reason. It will not be "taking healthcare into our own hands", and having the government do something never makes it cheaper.
The main problem is people think healthcare should be cheap or even free. The true cost is several hundred dollars per person per month. Insurance being wedged between the buyer and seller has distorted the market pricing along with government involvement via medicare, etc.
Having insurance paid for through our employers is another silly thing we do which causes all sorts of problems. We don't let our employers handle our house payments or our food costs.
People need to actually budget the real costs of healthcare. Yes, it might mean a smaller house or fewer flat screen TVs, but that is the sacrifice our family has made for 30 years and it was a good investment.
Yes there are people who can't afford the basics, but a MUCH smaller program would pay for all of that without a government take over.
And another thing, Doctors do not want to work for the federal government. They are already being squeezed. I want them to be paid very well and according to their skill and accomplishments. I have no problem with a good surgeon having a $1m house and a luxury car. None. They take a lot of crap, make life and death decisions every day, while dealing with lawsuits, reduced medicare payouts, continuing education, crazy schedules, and the list goes on.
The world needs one country like the US.
