Posted by stillnotcured on October 14, 2009 at 01:08:47:This is imteresting news. Looks like they've finally developed a hypoglossal nerve stimulator that works :-) My understanding in a nutshell about hypoglossal nerve stimulation: it solves the problem of the "loss of muscle tone to the airway" we experience during sleep. The lack of nerve impulses/signals from the brain to the airway when we fall asleep supposedly causes muscle tone loss. The hypoglossal nerve controls the tongue, etc.
I used to read about research in the past where they tried to create a device that this is. But it was pretty crude. It either over-stimulated the nerve and caused nerve fstigue and damage. This new one is adjustable (I think by the physician) to match the patient. So I guess it's sort of comparable to a physician/sleep tech adjusts the pressure of a CPAP for that particular patient.
Still in clinical trial stage (I believe in Europe). It's an implant device so requires surgery. Just hope it'll be available soon since I've run out of surgical options.
