Hi sleeping-in-SF,
After my arch bars were removed, I could barely open my jaws and experienced TMJ pain on one side. Like you, I tried to minimize chewing and talking (through my barely-open jaw) but pain worsened over time, jaws did not open any further. Here's what helped: I went to the orthodontist recommended by Dr. L (Dr. I) who made me a splint AND gave me a prescription for physical therapy. Both really helped. Be careful about the OTC pain meds you're taking; I developed stomach pain and GERD as a result, which took about six months to resolve.

Wishing you good luck...
