Posted by Sandman on November 30, 2010 at 01:03:00:In case anyone wants to know some of the details of sleepnet's server crash, here they are.
Our dedicated server, which we have been using for many years, crashed taking down the hard disk with it. This started a chain of events that continued until today.
Problem 1- The last good back-up the provider made was Nov. 21st so 10 days of data was missing. You may have seen the forum last week where recent postings had disappeared. The server was supposed to be backed up twice a week.
Problem 2- The software our server was running is no longer supported by the provider so moving the Nov. 21st backup over to a new server quickly wasn't an option. They needed to build a new server and modify our backup and their software just to make the site viewable. There was lots of confusion between techs, the site went up and down, and what should have taken a couple days took a week.
Problem 3- I wanted the forums to be current, no lost postings, and needed to take every posting since Nov. 21st and manually, one by one, add them back to the forums.
Problem 4- Once everything was put back together the perl scripts, for posting messages, would not work with the new software so I needed to modify the script to meet the specs of new server.
To say my Thanksgiving week was intense would be a major understatement. I fought everyday to keep them moving on the fix.
We will not know if everything is back to normal until postings start back up. Please let me know if you have any problems posting, viewing pages, etc. I need your help to ensure everything is working like it should.
Thanks,
Sandman
