Wow, my posting last week was really a downer. Things are looking up a bit this week. Here are the details:

1) Back to work. I was blessed in being able to take 6 weeks off; Monday was my first day back. Most people knew what happened to me. Lots of people felt they should say something, but weren't sure what. Sometimes a little awkward. People that felt comfortable discussing the issue said that I simply looked different, not worse. Still like my jaw. Still tired, but made it through the first 2 days.

2) Swelling and physical condition: I guess I have more swelling than I thought I did, since people commented on it. There's a fair amount just above my upper lip. In general, I feel things more in my upper jaw than lower--it's almost as if I'm wearing a retainer. No pain, no real difficulty talking. I can't open my mouth that wide; eating sushi, for example, is an adventure (but a fun one).

3) Numbness: still quite a bit in my upper teeth, but feels 90% gone everywhere outside of my mouth. All that worrying for nothing.

4) Eating: I'm eating salmon, sushi, macaroni and cheese. I feel that I could eat more varied foods, but I don't want the MMA gods to strike me down or ruin my bite. If anyone has any good ideas about 6-week post-op eating, I'd be glad to hear them.

5) Sleep: After I recovered from the surgery, things steadily got worse until maybe 3-4 days ago. Now they're getting slightly better. I don't know if this is a real phenomenon, or just a zag following a zig. There are too many variables to really come up with a credible hypothesis, so I'm just going to save my brain cells and wait and see. I've been sleeping about 7 hours lately. I feel fatigue during the day, but it seems better than before the surgery. At least a little. I've accepted the fact that it may take me quite a while to improve my sleep.

6) More surgery: my turbinates are really big for some reason. In 8 days, I'll get them shrunk, with additional septoplasty if necessary. Although I'm not looking forward to it, I am looking forward to being able to breathe easily through my nose. I'm hoping that this procedure, together with further reduction of swelling, will convince my brain that everything is okay and that it can relax.

Thanks for reading. Until next time!
