My understanding - I am not a doctor, but definitely ask these questions and research the literature - is that this is a progressive disease. I believe that the airway becomes more colapsable as we age. So I am in the "buying time" mode. I think it is important to manage my own expectations up front. I need to control my weight and refrain from tobacco use. If I do the right things, have a skilled surgeon, and maybe a little luck, my expectation is to buy myself 15 to 20 years. Since I can't go even another year like this, it is an easy decision. I am trying to prepare myself for the eventuality that things may not go as well as I hope long term, so that I can cope with that when and if it comes. If I need to look at another surgery up the road, or CPAP, I will deal with it.
This one of those times that I need to be "in the now." I am a bit like John Walton from the old series on the spiritual thing. While I am not a big church goer, I am not dismissive either. I have a lot of people who love me and are praying like crazy, and I certainly welcome that. Heck, if I thought it would help, I would swallow my lucky casino chip, but that would be a pain in the butt :-)
