Hi Professor. I just noticed your questions in my
earlier thread which I was getting ready to point
you to. I was 46 and was approximately 25 pounds
overweight at the time of the surgery. I had the
classic overbite and recessed chin. I had been
treated with UPPP surgery and septoplasty, along
with tonsilectomy. I used the CPAP 100 percent and
it failed to regulate, as evidenced by the data
coming out of the machine.

Dr. KL looked at all of the data, x-rays and scope
that he performed, and proclaimed me a good
candidate. He presented some conservative odds
for success, outcomes, etc. I believe that if he
thought I was not a good candidate, he would have
turned me away. He strikes me as someone who takes
success and outcomes very seriously, and has the
experience to measure the odds for success.

I continue to sleep well, wake rested, and not
really need caffeine. I still have some numbness
in the mouth and joint pain in the right jaw which
seems to be improving. I am steadily increasing my exercise load, bicycling minimum of 10-20 miles
with longer rides every weekend - 4 or 5 days a
week. In a few weeks I will bike the MS 150 ride
locally, 150 miles in 2 days. In February, I did
not have the energy to exercise. Now I feel like I
NEED to exercise to burn off excess energy. We are
just over 4 months out of the surgery and 3 months
since having my arch bars removed.

As others have stated, I recommend finding a
doctor who is at the skill level of the folks out
of Stanford. At the very least, you can use them
as a resource to tell you if you are a good
candidate and talk about outcomes, having
confidence in the answers you are getting.

By the way, I am getting ready to get the nose
worked on again locally, as advised by Dr. KL. The
turbinates are large and the septum is still not
quite right. I believe it is actually exacerbating
the pain in my right jaw, because I can not breath
through it well while exercising, and sucking wind
through my mouth for an hour is followed by some
pain.

Good Luck.
