The pain associated with any form of UPPP is dependent on
the surgical instrument used, whether tonsillectomy was done,
surgical skill and the individual patient's pain tolerance. On
average, most of the patients are on pain meds round the
clock for 5-7 days and then only needing meds in the evening
for another 3-4 days.
For genioglossus advancement, it is usually less painful. The
recovery is dependent on the surgical skill, the extent of
bleeding during surgery (blood traps in the floor of mouth and
causes swelling). It should be fairly minimal after 10 days.
One of the frequent side effect is numbness of the lower front
teeth and is usually related to the height of the mandible and
the length of the tooth roots. If the bone cuts are very close to
the tooth roots, then the risk of permanent numbness, even
needing future root canal is higher. You can assess the risks
and healing with X-rays before and after the operation.
