Well, I've always had sleep problems since I was a teen. I was finally diagnosed in 2008 with OSA. I have it due to my craniofacial characteristics, i.e. small, receding jaw = narrow airway. My dad has severe OSA and I also had bad orthodontic work which didn't help. I tried cpap, oral appliances which didn't help. Then I had mma surgery which helped about 30-40% but my post surgery RDI was unchanged. I went back on cpap, bipap but was still sympotomatic albeit improved. I had problems with GERD, sinus infections, aerophagia. Also, my co-existing asthma didn't help. I was still suffering from fatigue and cognitive problems which was harming my work performance not to mention my personal life which had become non-existent at that point. I was finally trached in NOv. 11 at UCLA. I thought I would feel better instantaneously which I did the first week but afterwards there was so much coughing and mucus that my lungs really took a beating. I had this severe hung over feeling for about 3 months which left me bedridden. Others on this board have had a similar experience. I also slept a lot and needed to take naps during the day time. I'm still suffering from fatigue issues and an erratic sleep schedule. I am also taking naps. The recovery process has been really slow but I think it was because I was so damaged pre-surgery. I've noticed definite improvements in my depression/anxiety, sleep quality, speech and writing abilities. My memory has also improved tremendously. I hope to eventually make a full recovery.
