Have you written to Dr. KL? Send him an email explaining your situation. My understanding from reading various blogs is that he's willing to
work with people (long term payment plans, etc.) with regard to financing, and he's certainly not out to make money at anyone's expense.

Nothing bad will happen from just writing an email. You have nothing to lose and potentially much to gain.
