In my case, as one of those sleepers whose brain prevents them from reaching the arbitrary hypopnea threshold, I tend to score low, and never really had any o2 desats to speak of. In other words, I was fine according to most of the numbers, except the staging.

I'm confident that the biggest reason my life is now worth living is that I'm getting more stage 3,4, REM.

However, if that staging was forced upon me with drugs while my airway was small, I WOULD have had a drop in o2 and a high AHI. And I probably would have felt better too.
