Posted by sleeplessinDenver on November 05, 2012 at 22:53:53:I am anticipating MMA surgery in late January/early February and had braces put on one week ago in anticipation thereof. Prior to my second consult with the Oral Maxillo-Facial surgeon, I had an appt. with my ENT to get his thoughts and to have a nasal scope (can't recall the clinical term for it now) that Aetna wanted before giving pre-cert. Let's just say my ENT was less than enthusiastic about choosing MMA over other ENT-delivered procedures first. He actually urged me to have a UPPP first even though in 2010 he opined an UPPP would not help me and acknowledged in the here and now, that I did not have enlarged tonsils or an elongated uvula (background: this ENT performed a septoplasty/turbinoplasty in 2010 that while I do not regret it in the least, it did not improve my breathing). He considered the MMA to be a radical step that should only be considered after I've tried a bunch of (useless) ENT fixes like UPPP and I suppose laser reduction of the tongue, hyoid suspension, etc., etc. I came away from that consultation feeling trapped between two competing disciplines re: treatment of OSA. My 3D I-Scan x-rays confirmed my airway is the size of a drinking straw and the OMF opined that I have mid-face deficiency and mild retrognathia. So why would I ever try UPPP first???? Is this just a turf-war thing???
