Allison,

First of all, your ranting is warranted. Keep ranting and raving until you get satisfaction!
I also had extreme difficulty falling asleep on my first sleep test, but normally I fall asleep instantly!
Sounds like your pulmonologist might have her cause and effect reversed. Apnea may be causing the reflux problem, but of coarse she doesn’t know that because she won’t order the sleep test!

Giving your medicine time to work is a code word for, ”I’m too busy right now to deal with you, call me later, perhaps when I’ve come back from my vacation”.

I suffered with a low-grade fever for an entire summer one year, because my apnea was out of control and I was not getting proper treatment. Waited a month to see the top ENT at this hospital. The ENT had me on nasal sprays for 5 weeks even though the fine print on the data sheet said the drug should reach steady state in 5 days. That nasal spray didn’t help me at all! Later I found out the doctor was on vacation.

I also went through a battery of bogus tests with a bad pulmonologist (and he was highly regarded as the best in the area) I went armed with a video of myself having apneas. I even had the taped cued to just right spot so the doctor could watch just one minute of it to see my apneas, but he wasn’t interested.

A few doctors later, I finally had a good sleep doctor.

My suggestion is to find your own specialist. Use the internet to its fullest. Go back to your PCP and say, ”The Doctor you sent me to sucks!” “This doctor is the one I want to see, give me a referral.” (or words to that effect)

An accredited sleep center in your area should be able to point you to a good sleep doctor. There are many more sleep centers now than there were 8 years ago so you might be able to find a better one than your last.

You have to get in contact with the right doctor! (with or without referral) They will help you with insurance/non-insurance issues.

Keep fighting! ~ Apnea Guy
