It sounds like you are considering this Trach as a more permanent solution. Mine was a temporary 'test' to see if I would be an appropriate candidate for Mandibular Advancement surgery.
What I can tell you about my Trach experience is that I definitely felt better with it. Things that I didn't expect were; doctor said I'd have it for 2-4 weeks, I had it for 2 months; Twice I got emphyzema (sp?) from coughing too hard. The emphyzema is air that gets into your tissue or muscle and has to work it's way out. This caused some serious pain in my neck and shoulder (the air moves around) and for a couple days I couldn't move my arm. It was better after the first couple of weeks and didn't happen after that; I coughed and ran a fever for a few weeks. The coughing is not convenient but I tolerated it for 2 months because I felt better.
Definitely keep it cleaned because it gets a lot of mucus buildup and it's harder to breath.
If it weren't for that fact that I love scuba diving, I may have tried to tolerate it a little longer. Now I'm waiting to have the Mandibular Advancement and the genio something (tongue advancement) and I wish I felt as good as I did with the Trach.
Of course everyone's situation is different but I can say that it was a positive experience in that I learned what will help me and that I could be helped.
Hope this helps.
