Genioplasty/Hyoid Suspension Surgery -- Day 6

Posted by sean on April 08, 2001 at 13:17:14:

Well, I'm definitely glad I had the surgery. Even though there's still some swelling left, my apnea condition and symptoms have improved significantly. If I was to rate my condition prior to any surgeries I had, and on the scale of 10 where 10 was the worst (with all of the loud gasping & panting I did), I'd say I'm now at a 3 or 4. That's already better than what the CPAP has ever done for me. At best, the CPAP brought my condition down to around a 6. I've been sleeping 7 to 8 hours straight now and waking up without feeling like I just ran around the block like always. (Say "Buh-bye" to the CPAP ;->

The first surgeries I did over an year ago (Septoplasty, laser-assisted Uvulopalatomy) did nothing for my apnea. After that, somnoplasty treatments to the tongue brought down the severity of my condition to around a 7 or 8. Now it's at a 3 or 4 and that's with the swelling. Hopefully it will get even better as the swelling goes down, knock on wood :-)

Pain hasn't been much of a problem with the pain meds. The only difficult part of the ordeal was to spent two days in ICU. More of an inconvenience than anything. Some partial numbness/tingling feeling around the chin and upper neck. Also some numbness with the lower front set of teeth. My lip feels fine however. In most cases doc expects everything to get back to normal in a few months as the nerves reattach/grow, etc.
