I'm not really sure if I'm the exception. I've read alot of posts in this forum and if anything, I think I am the norm, i.e. people who've tried dental appliances and didn't see exceptional results. SOME results, but nothing exceptional like the tongue advancenmet surgeries such as the GA or MMA. I'm not against dental appliances in any way. I think it's worth a try as a treatment alternative. But to say that dental appliances didn't work and therefore tongue advancement surgery doesn't work is a bit misleading.

Everything I've read on the subject (medical papers, abstracts, etc) seems to show it being effective for mild apnea and not very effective for moderate to severe apnea. It describes tongue displacement of couple of millimeters even if the mandible is pulled forward painfully at its max position. It describes the amount of hypopharyngeal airspace that dental devices can open up and it can only do so much. Every doc I've met (top specialists, maxillofacial surgeons, dentists who uses dental appliances extensively in their practice) also said the same thing, i.e. the limitations of what a dental appliance can do in advancing the base of the tongue and that it won't be nearly as dramatic as surgical techniques. Heck, my somnoplasty to the tongue was alot more effective than dental appliances...
