First, dental devices have their shortcomings, and are not a cure all. Sometimes they do hurt. But they can neither be included or excluded in a sentence or two. They are a treatment research project in their own right.

I don't recall, probably did as the MMA is such a major procedure with a less than 100% predictability. Although there is no doubt that a 100% successful MMA is preferable to a hole in the throat and all of it's accompanying maintenance. After my research, a trache was my first choice. And I came within days of getting one when centrals were confirmed as my primary problem, so I am consigned to a life of bipap st. good enough.

I think this thread has drifted off the point of the original question. Dave R has had it up to there with his pap, and is considering surgery, and wanted a little direction. So all of our opinions and statistics are a bit irrevelant. He needs to know what the various surgeries are, and also, any other alternative treatments, and make up his own mind as to what is appropiate for him. For me, I claim no expertise, I only relay my direct experience. I can see no way that my experience would diminish yours. I think there is no room for any debate in this forum as to who is right. Everybody is.

This thread also represents one of the glaring shortcomings of this forum. The desired information is scattered all about, and draped in opinion. It takes a lot for a new fellow to sort it out. Those of us who have been around awhile know pretty much what the paps are, what the dental devices are, and what the surgeries are. There are links to the best of, but I don't know of anyplace along the lines of "so you have sleep apnea, here's your options, pro and con of each".
