MMA Surgery finally scheduled

Posted by Mr. K on May 24, 2001 at 07:25:16:

I finally have a date with the surgeon on July 10th. Currently my RDI is 85. The surgeon plans on doing the MMA surgery and to get about 1 inch in jaw movement. They will be taking bone from my hip to fill in the gaps created by repositioning my jaw. I figure that after the surgery I will either look like Mr. Ed (the horse) or Jay Leno.

One of the interesting things that he mentioned was that my airway only measures 1 mm and on a normal person it should measure 10-11 mm. My jaws will be wired shut for 8-10 weeks , so if I can I might come to cry on your shoulders.

The doctor also said that I need to have a second surgery...nasal surgery. I lack enough cartlidge in my nose to keep it from collapsing when I breath. They did not want to do the nasal and MMA at the same time because it would be almost a 12 hour surgery.

I have my worries but I believe that I will be so much better off after this is through. I will keep you all up-to-date on my office visits prior to surgery and let you all know how I am doing after.
