This is becoming a FAQ. Here are a few points:
1. MMA is a permanent cure to OSAS about 90-95% of the time.
2. MMA can be a big deal to recover from. It means a minimum of 2-3 weeks out of work.
3. More disconcerting, some people have difficulty breathing while they have their jaws wired shut. You didn't mention any nasal surgery procedures. If I were you, I'd make sure that you can breathe easily and comfortably through your nose exclusively before having an MMA.
4. MMA will change your appearance, but it's a significant improvement in most cases. Have a look at
http://www.bhcs.com/proceedings/13_4/13_4_wolford.htm (figure 5)
and
http://www.oc-j.com/dec99/OSAS.htm
for before & after pictures of OSAS patients who had MMAs. The primary change in your appearance seems to be in profile, rather than from straight-on.
5. Your jaws don't always need to be wired shut afterward. It depends on the details of your surgery, and often can't be predicted ahead of time.
6. Orthodontia is sometimes needed after an MMA, but it's unusual.
7. In unusual cases, some surgical treatment to the soft palate is still needed after an MMA. It wouldn't need to be as extensive as a UPPP if it's needed at all.
Hope this helps.
